SUMMARY:EPA's VOICES OF THE VILLAGE "Left Turn\, No Signal"
DESCRIPTION:EPA’s VOICES OF THE VILLAGE “Left Turn\, No Signal”\n \n \n \n \n \n That “left turn\, no signal” feeling is so real. One minute you’re cruising along\, music on\, windows down\, singing loudly – and the next\, you’re slamming on the brakes\, wondering what just happened. Life is that way – we are going along\, and everything seems okay when a left turn happens! In the moment\, the feeling is jarring. Sometimes the feeling is deeply painful. At other times\, an opportunity appears out of nowhere. Then there are times when a shift occurs in a friendship that causes us to feel loss and unsure. \nTruth is\, we want to have “the signal” so we can prepare for the next turn. \nWe’ve all had those “no signal” moments when plans have unraveled\, and doors are shut unexpectedly. \nWe would love to hear your story. What was your “left turn\, no signal” moment – and what did it teach you? \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Reserve Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Baptist Town Quilt - Quilter’s Talk
DESCRIPTION:THE BAPTIST TOWN QUILT STITCHES LOVE AND LEGACY TOGETHER\n \n \n \n \n \n The Kukua Institute will host a quilt exhibit for “The Baptist Town Quilt\,” a large-scale appliqued art quilt that tells a story of Baptist Town\, a historic and predominantly African American neighborhood in Greenwood\, MS. Events for the unveiling of the quilt include a reception\, exhibition\, and quilter talk by the quiltmaker\, Patricia J. Gaston\, who was born in Baptist Town and grew up there in the 1960s. The opening reception is Friday\, February 20\, 2026\, at 5 PM; the quilter talk is Saturday\, February 21\, 2026\, at 2 PM; and the exhibition is Saturday\, February 21\, 2026\, 10 AM – 5 PM. \nIn 2020\, the first visions of the “Baptist Town Quilt” began with construction\, art\, and scrap paper. Her initial idea was to create the four neighborhood blocks that her mother and father allowed her to venture out to as a child. After seeing a map of the city\, its layout\, and her neighborhood\, she decided to design the project as the entire community as she remembered it in the 1960s. After six years\, the quilt was completed. \nThe perspective of the quilt is a 1960s aerial view made from a collection of fabrics that Patricia had in her home and bought from the fabric store. One special piece comes from one of her mother’s quilt tops that is at least 40 years old. The quilt is approximately 105” x 90” and is hand- and machine-stitched. \nAs early as six years old\, Patricia was introduced to quilting by her mother. In the early years\, their quilts had practical uses as bed covers and were often gifted to family members as functional and utilitarian. Fabric for these quilts often came from discarded family clothes\, neighbors who were seamstresses\, and retail stores. Her first quilt was a mixture of pieces of fabric given by her mother that Patricia made into a full-size quilt. “I gave it away as a gift\,” she said\, “which did not make my mother happy.” But the giving made Patricia happy. \nThe community of Baptist Town was close-knit and historically and predominantly populated by African Americans in Greenwood\, Mississippi. According to the research compiled for the community’s Mississippi Blues Trail Marker\, the neighborhood was established in the 1800s. Located in the Delta region\, it was known for its farming and production of cotton and oil. \nPatricia sees the “Baptist Town Quilt” as an extension of the gift that her parents\, siblings\, and her community gave to her. “It was woven into my DNA decades ago\,” she says\, “and I hope that this quilt will keep weaving that same community spirit of love and legacy for decades to come.”All events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Living in an Icon: Contemplation in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this transformational day retreat. \n \n \n \n \n \n The Center for Sacred Space seeks to offer Nature Contemplation Retreat Days three times per year. People commonly report finding it easy to connect with the Sacred while in nature\, and these retreat days offer the setting\, facilitation\, and tools to do so. \nScience is increasingly confirming what many of us routinely experience from time in nature – lowered stress levels\, a sense of transcendence and connection to something greater than ourselves\, better attention spans\, and an overall sense of well-being\, refreshment for mind\, body\, and spirit. \nThe retreat facilitators hold a Certificate in Contemplation and Care for Creation from the Center for Deep Green Faith. The schedule of the retreat day offers a short time of teaching which includes a prompt reflection\, followed by a time of silent personal reflection\, and a re-gathering to discuss the experience together. Lunch follows\, and the process is repeated with a different prompt in the afternoon. Any adult is welcome to participate. Join us for lunch\, outdoor exploring\, contemplative meditation\, and community reflection. \nThe book used for the retreats is called Living in an Icon written by Jerry Cappel and Robert Gottfried. Bring a chair\, water bottle\, hat and sunscreen\, comfortable shoes to walk and explore. \n \n \n \n \n \n Bring Water Bottle & Chair

SUMMARY:EPA's VOICES OF THE VILLAGE "Fresh Starts: Goodbyes & Hellos" Story Slam
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of storytelling and community connection at EPA’s VOICES OF THE VILLAGE “Fresh Starts: Goodbyes & Hellos Story Slam!\n \n \n \n \n \n “FRESH STARTS: GOODBYES & HELLOS” \n“Fresh Starts: Goodbyes & Hellos” is the theme of the Equity Project Alliance’s New Year’s story slam. As we reflect on the past year and look forward to the New Year\, what a wonderful time to capture our thoughts about what we are saying goodbye to and\, more importantly\, what we plan to say hello to in the New Year. A fresh start gives us the opportunity to start something new and to let go of something that no longer fits – both figuratively and literally. What is something that you are looking forward to doing or becoming in the New Year? What is something that you want to let go of? If you’re not sure what this might be\, just ask a good friend. \nIn this New Year filled with new beginnings\, what will you do to transform yourself into the best YOU? Are you ready to embrace discomfort\, set clear intentions\, and take deliberate steps to becoming a better version of you? Are you ready to reflect on what you wish you had done differently in the past year? Are you ready to begin something dynamic in the New Year! What an ideal space to begin your journey of self-transformation. Begin with the end in mind. \nIf you are interested in sharing your story\, email katlyn@innisfreehotels.com for your editable online application today! Only eight spots available! Applications are due by December 27th\, 2024. If you are selected to share your story\, you will be notified by January 7\, 2025. \n \n Reserve A Spot Today

SUMMARY:A Conversation in Black & White: Just a Tad Bit Different
DESCRIPTION:You are about to witness a unique undertaking. This two-person dialogue explores the lived experiences of two Southerners who grew up in the Deep South during a time of racial segregation. One participant grew up in a wealthy suburb of Birmingham; the other grew up in a rural south Georgia town. Their conversation will explore various topics from each person’s worldview and experiences through the years. \nThis inside look at the experiences of these two individuals will leave you with a broadened perspective of how worldviews are shaped as they explore the world of rich\, poor\, white\, black\, male\, female\, music\, dance and myriad other topics. You may feel connected\, curious\, uncomfortable\, surprised\, inspired or hopeful. Whatever emotion you feel\, you will be moved by their honest responses. As we strive to improve conversations about race and difference in our community\, what better way to do so than to invite you to listen in and share your thoughts about their conversation over dinner. \nScholars have found that friendships are a fitting space to have these conversations. We are glad that we are surrounded by friends as we explore the nuances of dialogue cross culturally through the decades with the twists and turns that have occurred in the lives of these two individuals. Who knows what we might learn? \nHope to see you there!
